Durak: The Fool's Errand to Victory – A Comprehensive Guide to the Rules

Durak (Дурак), meaning "fool" in Russian, is a popular shedding-type card game enjoyed across Eastern Europe and beyond. Its simple premise belies a surprisingly strategic depth, making it engaging for both casual players and seasoned card sharks. This guide will walk you through the rules, ensuring you're ready to conquer your opponents and avoid becoming the Durak yourself.

The Goal: Be the first player to get rid of all your cards.

Number of Players: Typically 2-6 players, though variations exist.

Deck: A standard 52-card deck is used. Jokers are typically not included.

Card Values: Cards rank from 6 (lowest) to Ace (highest), with the Ace being the strongest card. Suits are not ranked against each other (hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades are equal).

Dealing the Cards: The deck is shuffled, and each player receives the same number of cards, depending on the number of players:

  • 2 players: 6 cards each
  • 3 players: 5 cards each
  • 4 players: 5 cards each
  • 5-6 players: 6 cards each

The remaining cards form the draw pile (also called the stock).

Gameplay:

  1. Attacking: The player with the lowest card of the lowest suit begins the attack. (If multiple players have the same lowest card and suit, the player to the left of the attacker goes first). They lay down one or more cards, face up, onto the table.

  2. Defending: The player to the left of the attacker must defend against the attack. To defend against a card, they must play a card of the same rank but higher suit. For example, a 7 of hearts can be defended by a 7 of spades.

  3. Multiple Cards: If the attacker plays multiple cards of the same rank, the defender must defend each card individually with a card of the same rank but a higher suit.

  4. Unable to Defend: If a player cannot defend against a card (they don't possess a higher card of the same rank), they must pick up all the cards on the table. Their turn is then over.

  5. Additional Cards: After a successful defense, the player can choose to attack again. The attacking player continues until they are unable to attack, or the defender successfully defends all the cards.

  6. Drawing Cards: After each round, all players draw cards from the stock pile until they each have the original number of cards in their hands. If the stock is empty, the player's turn continues without drawing more cards.

  7. Winning the Game: The game continues until one player has successfully gotten rid of all their cards, becoming the winner. The remaining players are the "Duraks" (fools).

Special Considerations:

  • Trump Suit: In some variations, a trump suit is designated, making any card of that suit superior to any other card (regardless of value).
  • Sixes: In many variations, sixes can be played on any card. They can't be beaten, but must be played on their own or in a separate attack.

Strategy:

Durak is a game of calculated risk. Key strategies include:

  • Knowing your opponent's hand (partially): Observing what cards your opponents play gives you clues about what they still hold.
  • Planning attacks carefully: Don't waste your stronger cards too early, save some power for when you’re close to winning.
  • Defense: Effective defense is crucial. Try to avoid picking up cards whenever possible.

Mastering Durak requires practice and a good understanding of probability and risk assessment. So grab a deck of cards, gather your friends, and prepare for some fierce card battles! Now go forth, and may the fool not be you!
